or you can just type alt-u then u. alt u makes the umlaut then you type the letter you want to finish it off. ë ä ü ¨¨¨¨You can just make umlauts too.
oh, and by the way...there is no umlaut on the word umlaut. I know you like to be pedantic. ;-)
