dmiessler.com/about/
Well, after an overwhelmingly negative response (honest feedback that I appreciated, by the way), I decided to have another go at redesigning a logo from scratch. So I busted out Flash and started hackin’ away.

Also as I look @ the side letters, I understand you want it to be "DM" but it looks much more like OM, OE ...
Also since your tagline is "grep understanding knowledge" and you've got a big old PIPE line there between your letters running down and your letters running across, you might as well put "grep" running down, and your Dmiessler & "understanding knowledge" across - this way your tagline would actually reflect the cmd line "grep|dmiessler" (search yourself) and "grep|understanding knowledge".
It would also invite a little thought and would be an artisitic way to express the thought.
Just my $0.07 .... (accounting for inflation).

I like how "dmeissler.com" and "grep understanding knowledge" take up the same amount of horizontal space.
I like the logo you have as your favicon. I don't know what it means, but it is visually appealing.

I am not able to do the grep on the left thing because I'm set on having my logo out to the left, with the text on the right. So anything going on the left should be a standalone image/icon -- an image that will also serve as the favicon.
As far as the OE issue, I can definitely see that. I think it's fair enough to say, however, that many big logos are kind of abstract and look like other things by themselves -- especially the more artistic ones. In other words, many logos are likely to look strange at first and then grow on you.
As for my other logo/icon being good, I hear that a lot and it's starting to make me think I should focus my efforts on redoing *it* (I made that one myself also) instead of trying to invent something different.
Like Bossman said in the beginning, it's often just not necesary to change a good thing.
Hmm, much thinking and Flash work must be done.
Thanks for all the feedback; it's very helpful.
